Subject Taiwan FDI Statistics Summary Analysis (May 2019)

According to the statistics of Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 1,476 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with a total amount of US$3,055,920,000 were approved from January to May 2019. This indicates an increase of 5.81% in the number of cases, and an increase of 9.48 % in FDI amount compared with the same period of 2018.
   With regard to inward investment from Mainland China, 56 cases were approved with an amount of US$28,202,000 from January to May 2019. This indicates a decrease of 6.67% in the number of cases, and a decrease in the FDI amount (74.23%) compared with the same period of 2018. Aggregated from July 2009 to May 2019, 1,284 cases were approved with a total investment amount added up to US$2,215,993,000.
   In terms of Taiwan’s outbound investment (except Mainland China), 257 projects were registered from January to May 2019 with a total amount of US$3,008,399,000 indicating an increase of 11.26% in the number of cases but a decrease of 1.09 % in the amount as compared with the same period of 2018.
   As for Taiwan’s outward investment to Mainland China, 249 applications have been approved from January to May 2019, indicating a decrease of 2.73 % compared with the same period of 2018. The approved investment amount is US$1,905,131,000, 45.99 % less than the same period in 2018.
